What is it like making claims for clients?

All Financial Planners would agree that their top priority is to ensure that their clients are well taken care of. Because unexpected situations can and have occurred before. Even the healthiest of people can fall sick and you never know what’s going to happen in the future. So whether you like it or not, proper insurance planning is crucial.

And we all know that the insurance business is all about making claims. Claiming insurance happens when one’s typically suffered from a certain loss or damage in property under unforeseen circumstances. When this happens, Financial Planners are usually the ones who will help clients with their claims. Of course, the experience of getting an insurance claim is different for everyone and we have interviewed two of our Financial Planners to find out their experiences dealing with claims for clients.

What is it like making claims as a Financial Planner?

Our Financial Planner Evelyn who has been in the industry for over three years usually makes claims for minor accidents or incidents that fall under the Personal Accident Plan. But one time, she received a surprising call from one of her youngest clients. Back then, Evelyn was just taking over his policy because his previous agent had left and she wanted to meet him to introduce herself. But because the client was busy preparing for his wedding, he kept on rescheduling their meetings.

Having not yet met him, one day, he texted Evelyn and informed her that he suffered from a heart attack and has been hospitalised. He also asked if his policy has any sort of coverage. This news very much shocked Evelyn because the client was only 28 years old, too young to have suffered from a heart attack. The doctors couldn’t give a reason as the client works out regularly, is very fit, and his recent health checkup showed that he was healthy.

But because of this situation, Evelyn realised that anything can happen and that the future is really out of our control. Based on her experience, her advice for other Financial Planners is to always stay calm when receiving emergency calls such as this. And when helping clients with claims, it’s important to be sincere and empathetic towards their family members too. Processing claims involve a lot of administrative procedures, therefore, Financial Planners must remain calm and sincere about helping their clients. Because when they do their job with care, clients will appreciate their efforts. And this helps in building strong client relationships.

On the other hand, our Financial Planner with 17 years of experience in the field, Rowena, is used to making hospitalisation claims for acute or one-off conditions and chronic conditions such as death and cancer claims. She has also made claims for a child with leukaemia within over two years of the treatment course. According to Rowena, when dealing with complex claims, Financial Planners must try their best to inform their client about what their insurance policy covers and their claim criteria and conditions. Since it’s important that the client stays in the loop, Financial Planners should go through the policy wordings and plan benefits with customers to let them understand if a claim is possible. Clients who have made claims before will understand how important it is to properly plan their insurance.

Both Evelyn and Rowena enjoy helping clients make their claims. According to Rowena, it is always a relief for her when the client’s claims can be settled, either their bills are compensated or they receive a lump sum cash in their bank account. As for Evelyn, making claims is when you get to prove that you were wise to sell them the insurance policy. And it also makes her enjoy her job even more because she can actually see how she’s benefiting other people’s lives. Of course, she wishes that there is no need for any claims at all, but in unwelcomed circumstances, be it in the form of making claims, retirement planning or attaining the client’s financial goals, she is just glad that she can help her clients to get the payout and offer them practical assistance when they need it most.

As you can see from our sharing above, the financial plannery business has always been about putting the clients first. And although the claim-making process is not always easy, when you join KWO, Evelyn, Rowena, and other seasoned Financial Planners will give you guidance to making claims and assisting clients during difficult times.
