For mid-career Singaporeans

Is a career switch
right for you? Find out
in 30 minutes.

A free 30-minute conversation about your situation: your background, your numbers, your timeline. You'll leave with a straight answer on whether financial advisory fits you, and what to do next.

Ken has taken mid-career switchers from their first day as advisers to MDRT, year after year.

Is this you?

The thought keeps coming back

Most people who switch mid-career sit with the idea for a year or more first. If any of these sound like you, you're further along than you think.

The ceiling is too low

You're good at your job, and you can see where it goes for the next ten years. That's the problem.

You want your work to be yours

Your hours, your clients, your results. Not another restructure decided three floors up.

You have responsibilities

A mortgage, parents, children. Starting from scratch isn't an option unless the path is clear and the risk is understood.

You have never worked in finance

Engineering, teaching, hospitality, the forces, sales. That is where most career-switchers come from.

What you get from 30 minutes

Answers you cannot get from an article

A straight read on fit

Whether your background, temperament and financial position suit this career. You'll hear it plainly, either way.

The real timeline

What the months between deciding and your first client conversation contain: exams, appointment, training.

The money conversation, honestly

What changes when you go from salaried to self-employed: CPF, runway, how the first year works. No figures we cannot stand behind.

A clear next step, or a clear no

You leave knowing what to do next. If the answer is "not yet" or "not this", you'll hear that on the call, not six months in.

How it works

Three steps, one decision

1
Two minutes

Pick a slot

Choose a time that suits you. You get a confirmation with a calendar invite and a Zoom link, and you can reschedule from that email.

2
30 minutes

Talk it through

Your situation first, then the career and what the switch would mean for you. Bring your questions. Nothing to prepare.

3
Your call

Decide with the facts

Continue, wait, or walk away. Whichever it is, you'll decide with a clear picture instead of a guess.

Who you'll be talking to

Someone who has sat where you are

Your call is with Ken Wee, who left structural engineering for financial advisory in 2003 and now runs Ken Wee Organisation, an agency unit of HSBC Life (Singapore).

He has worked with mid-career switchers from many fields and taken them from new adviser to MDRT, year after year. He's selective on purpose: you'll get a candid read on your fit, and if the honest answer is "not for you", that's what you'll hear.

Before you book

What a switch into financial advisory involves

The facts up front, so your 30 minutes go on your situation rather than the basics.

What it takes

  • Age 21 or above, with A-Levels, an IB Diploma, a polytechnic diploma, or an assessed equivalent. No degree required.
  • A principal firm that appoints you. You can't appoint yourself, and the firm sets which exam modules you sit.
  • The CMFAS examinations. For a life-insurance-led career: RES5, M9 and M9A. RES5 runs daily on weekdays.
  • Months, not years, from decision to first client conversation.

What changes

  • Most agency advisers are self-employed appointed representatives, not employees.
  • CPF: nothing accumulates in your Ordinary Account unless you contribute voluntarily. Plan for that before you resign, not after.
  • You need a runway that covers your fixed costs for a meaningful period.
  • The first year is decided by what you do, not by further study.

Questions people ask first

Frequently asked questions

Is this a sales pitch?

No. It's a 30-minute Zoom conversation about whether a switch into financial advisory makes sense for you. We would rather you decide on the call that the career is not for you than join and leave in eight months. Nothing is sold and there's no joining fee.

Do I need a finance background or a degree?

No. Under MAS Notice FAA-N26 the minimum is age 21 and a GCE A-Level certificate, an IB Diploma, a polytechnic diploma, or an assessed equivalent. You don't need a degree or prior finance experience. Most people who make this switch come from engineering, teaching, hospitality, the forces or sales.

How long does a switch into financial advisory take?

Commonly a matter of months rather than years. The elapsed time is dominated by exam preparation and your principal firm's appointment process. RES5 runs daily on weekdays, so scheduling is flexible.

What exams are involved?

For a life-insurance-led advisory career: RES5 (Rules, Ethics and Skills for Financial Advisory Services) plus M9 and M9A. Per the Singapore College of Insurance schedule, RES5 costs S$150 for members or S$180 for non-members per attempt, excluding GST. Your principal firm determines the exact modules.

What actually changes when I leave a salaried job?

Most agency advisers operate as self-employed appointed representatives. That changes how you're paid, your CPF (nothing accumulates in your Ordinary Account unless you make voluntary contributions), and the need for a financial runway covering your fixed costs before you resign. We talk through all of this on the call.

Who should not switch yet?

Hold off if you can't cover your fixed living costs on a variable income for a sustained period, if you have no genuine interest in the technical content such as CPF, tax and insurance, or if you are running away from a job rather than towards this one. We'll say so on the call if that's what we hear.

What happens after I book?

You pick a slot, get a confirmation email with a calendar invite and a Zoom link, and can reschedule or cancel from that email. The call is 30 minutes. If it makes sense to continue, you agree the next step together on the call.

Who will I be talking to?

Ken Wee Phua is the Founder and Wealth Solutions Director of Ken Wee Organisation, an agency unit representing HSBC Life (Singapore). He graduated in Civil and Structural Engineering from NTU in 2001, moved into financial services in 2003, and completed a Master of Applied Finance at the University of Adelaide in 2007. KWO was established in February 2020.
